Weight loss drugs: Exploring the benefits of GLP-1 agonists

March 27, 2023

As obesity rates continue to climb globally, weight loss drugs are becoming increasingly popular as a means of shedding excess weight. Although diet and exercise remain the go-to method for weight loss, some individuals may find it difficult to achieve their desired results through lifestyle changes alone. For those in this situation, weight loss medications from the GLP-1 family can be a good solution.

GLP-1 agonists are injectable medications that work by targeting hormones responsible for appetite and metabolism regulation. Doctors prescribe these medications to individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with weight-related health issues such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.

One of the key advantages of weight loss medication is that they can help people achieve significant weight loss that may be challenging to accomplish with diet and exercise alone. Clinical studies have demonstrated that over six months to a year, use of these medications can result in an average weight loss of 5-15% of a person’s body weight.

In addition to weight loss, these medications can also help improve various health markers. They’ve been shown to lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes. Saxenda has been found to enhance blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and insulin sensitivity, all of which can contribute to overall better health.

Another benefit of weight loss drugs is that they can help people maintain their weight loss over time. Research indicates that individuals who use these medications in conjunction with diet and exercise are more likely to maintain their weight loss than those who rely solely on lifestyle changes.

However, it’s important to remember that medications are not a “magic bullet” and do come with certain risks and potential side effects. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea are among the most frequent side effects, but these generally go away on their own after a few days or weeks.

Less common but more severe side effects may include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, and kidney problems, which is why these medications are only available with a prescription and should only be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Ultimately, your healthcare provider will help you decide which medication is best for you.
